Social and Recreational Life
Kent County

Recreation and leisure are necessary in everyone's life - and Kent County has many things to do.

You, your parents and your supports coordinator from the DDDS for should:

  • Be self-advocates. Begin to make your own decisions and follow chosen dreams and interests.
  • Know your legal rights, especially your right to be part of the community in which you live.

Recreational and cultural activities offer us:

  • Opportunities to interact with and learn from others – with and without disabilities – while enhancing social skills, self-esteem, self-worth and friendships.
  • Renewed energy and better physical and mental health.
  • Broader community connections which could lead to successful employment in the community.
  • Skills for more independent living in the community.

You, your son or daughter, and your supports coordinator from the DDDS should:

  • Ask your high school transition coordinator and your supports coordinator from The Division of Developmental Disabilities Services for a listing of local recreational opportunities.
  • Encourage your child to be a self-advocate. Support him in making his own decisions to follow chosen dreams and interests.
  • Make sure your child knows her legal rights, especially her right to be a part of the community she lives in.
